Draft

One thing I learned in college is to never submit an unfinished work and by this I mean a work that has not been proofread and edited. A period (.) on your very last sentence does not mean that your work is done and good to be published, it only means you have completed your DRAFT. Yes, a draft.  Now here is what Merriam-Webster has to say about draft:

DRAFT: noun , plural drafts

1 [count] : a version of something (such as a document) that you make before you make the final version

Sample sentences:

1. The published poem differs quite a bit from earlier drafts. ▪ I just completed a rough draft [=a first version that needs a lot of editing and rewriting] of my speech.

2.  The final draft [=the final version] is due tomorrow.

Probably you are wondering why I am writing about drafts, even defining it.  I just simply want to remind everyone about the basics of writing. Social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, etc) , poorly edited published books and works online have GREATLY affected people’s writing ability. Many have forgotten their grammar basics and have grown poor in spelling because of these sites, and this, I think, is alarming.

We, in our own ways, can somehow aid to this by publishing good reads promoting good grammar and correct spelling. How? All sites feature a Draft Folder, let us use it and stop publishing drafts on our web page. Take time to read and re-read your work, edit and improve your sentences then re-write everything. And just before you publish your work, again, proofread and make sure there are no more errors. Let us bring back the quality in writing.  If we will write, let us make sure that our work will be worth reading. Remember to always review your work to ensure the use of correct grammar and spelling. You do not want the whole cyberspace to laugh at you for posting something that reads like a minefield of errors, right?

Again, DRAFTS should be in your DRAFTS FOLDER not on your home page as a wall post.

A challenge to LOVE

I mentioned in my previous post that I am not fond of love and relationship as topics for writing. I have a list as to why and on top is — I do not know how to write about them. Yes, you read it right — I do not know how to write about love and relationship.  Webster and Wikipedia gave me a list of definitions so definitely I have, at least, an idea about the subjects in question.  My problem is I do not know how to organize my thoughts and put it into writing in such a way that my point will come across.  Write in such a way that when someone reads my work, he/she will feel the same emotion I was feeling when I was writing it. I want my work to be somehow worth reading because I do not want to waste my reader’s time. I believe writers should always consider the readers when writing.

Anyhow, I think I got a little derailed there. Going back to the topics in question — love and relationship, I have decided to challenge myself to write about both.  The challenge: write at least one blog about each topic per week. Fair enough for an amateur writer, I guess. The challenge will run for the entire month of August. I wish me luck.

To end this entry, here is something from The Beatles. Enjoy!

Astrology

Image

Until now I still do not understand people who are so into Zodiac signs and horoscopes.  I do not understand how they can say that these signs define a person.

Q: “Why do you not like the color red?”

A: “because I am a TAURUS!”

Q: “why do you not eat fish?”

A: “because I am a Pisces”

Seriously?

I am so sorry, but i just do not get it.  For me, no stars, constellations, sun, moon or alien can define who we are.  No birth signs or what have you can justify our actions and explain our decisions.

It should always be:  “I define ME”.

One happy blogger

For days I have been complaining about the wordpress application not working on my phone. Two days ago, I asked (on twitter) @wordpressdotcom for help to make the application work. I thought maybe I’m just not doing it right or that I’m missing something on the settings that’s why it is not working. Lucky enough, I got an email from wordpress giving me instructions on how to go about the application. After following the instructions, I tried posting a blog. True enough, it worked! Yey! I’m now a one happy blogger. Thanks wordpress for the quick response.

My attempt to love

This is an attempt to write a love story, and here is what I have to write about love.

Happiness.

Evolution of Blogs

I have not blogged or checked out blog sites in years. Although I constantly receive emails from certain sites for the blogs I am subscribed to, the ones I follow.  Weeks ago, because of excessive boredom, I decided to check out some blog sites — Blogspot, WordPress and Tumblr. I was surprised with how blogs are these days. Most posts were just media files with no caption or story to tell. Only few posts were sensible enough to read. I miss the old blogging days where pictures and videos tell a story.

How to Use Punctuation Correctly — by Daniel Scocco

This is a re-post of a blog I read somewhere.  I did not see any option to share it via WordPress.com so I decided to just copy-paste the entire blog. This is a useful reminder to everyone about the proper usage of punctuation marks. Enjoy reading!

How to Use Punctuation Correctly

Using punctuation correctly is important regardless of your occupation. If you are a blogger that is even more important; most readers consider the quality of writing determinant for the success of a blog.

The wikiHow website has an comprehensive article titled “How to Use English Punctuation Correctly” outlining the basics of punctuation usage. Below you will find a summary of the article.

1. The colon (:) is used to introduce lists and it appears after nouns.

Example: The Easter basket contained three things: an egg, a chocolate rabbit, and a candy.

Incorrect example: The Easter basket contained: an egg, a chocolate rabbit, and a candy.

2. The semicolon (;) is used to separate two related but independent clauses.

Example: People continue to worry about the future; our failure to conserve resources has put the world at risk.

3. The hyphen (-) is used when adding a prefix to words, when creating compound words or when writing numbers as words.

Example: Laura is his ex-girlfriend.

Example: There are fifty-two playing cards in a deck.

4. The dash (—) is used to make a brief interruption on a sentence, an additional statement or a dramatic qualification.

Example: An introductory clause is a brief phrase that comes—yes, you guessed it—at the beginning of a sentence.

5. The parentheses (()) is used to clarify or to add a personal statement. Its usage is similar to the dash, but it denotes a stronger “side notion”.

Example: Steve Case (AOL’s former CEO) resigned from the Time-Warner board of directors in 2005.

6. The double quotation mark (“) is used to enclose direct quotations from a person or from another text. Notice that commas or periods go inside the quotation marks.

Example: “I can’t wait to see him perform!” John exclaimed.

7. The single quotation mark (‘) is used to indicate possession, to contract verbs and to denote a quotation within a quotation.

Example: Ali said, “Anna told me, ‘I wasn’t sure if you wanted to come!’”

8. The comma (,) is used to indicate a break or pause within a sentence, to denote a series or to separate adjectives.

Example: The powerful, resonating sound caught our attention.

Blogger’s Dilemma

Nowadays, a blogger’s readability is greatly measured by the number of likes and reposts he/she gets on different social media sites.  Sad.

Do you agree?

wordpress mobile

I downloaded WordPress.com application on my Blackberry phone so I can bring my blog anywhere I go. Unfortunately, it does not allow me to do anything than write a blog, literally. It lets me write a blog but not post it.  It does not make sense.  I hope the developer of the application release an update soon.  An update that will make the application work how it is supposed to — let’s you write and post blogs.
